Duringhertravels,Kimhasbornewitnestosome ofthemoredramaticeƅectsofhowclimatechange, deforestationandpolutionhavedevastatedour planet.Asaresult,Kim hasdedicatedher20+ year,profesionalcareertofightingfortheplanet, standingupforenvironmentalinjustices,animal rightsandwildlifeconservation.

Forthepast7yearsKimhasbeenveryinvolvedin environmentalactivismasajournalist,activistand volunteer.LivinginSanFranciscosheregularly participatedin,andcoveredthevariousprotests andmarchesheldintheCity. From EarthDaycelebrationsandclimatestrikes, toyearlywoman’smarches,Kimcoveredthemal, walkingalongsidefelowClimateRealityLeaders fromtheBayAreaandbeyond.In2017sheatended thefirstofmanyWoman’smarches,volunteredfor EarthDayandtheSciencemarchandreportedon theenvironmentalmovementandclimatemarches inNorthernCalifornia. In2019KimcoveredtheAmazonStrikeheldinSan FranciscoinprotestandprotectionoftheAmazon rainforestwhichatthetimewasbeingdevastated byfire,folowedshortlyafterwardsbytheYouth ClimateStrike,whentheworld’syouthdecided theyhadenoughanditwastimetostandupforthe planetandmakethemselvesheard.

AsanactivememberofClimateReality Project,long-timesupporterandvolunteer with350bayarea.org,anda2041Alumni, Kim’snetworkingreach andworldwide aƆliationwithalthingssustainablehas sincegrown into aglobalbusines in communitysustainabilityconsulting. Born in LosAngeles,California in 1998, Devongrew upsuroundedbythefilm and entertainmentindustry.Thisheavilyinfluenced hisdecisiontopursueacareerinfilmandnews mediaatColumbiaColegeinChicago,where hehasdedicatedhisstudiestolearningtheins andoutsofproductionanddocumentaryfilm making. Devon’s original focus centered around communityinjustices;however,hispasions havesinceexpandedtocovernumerousother socialmovementsandcauses.Asayoung studentandaspiringdocumentarianunder lockdown,italcametoaheadinthesummer of2020duringthefirstwaveoftheglobal pandemicandtheBlackLivesMater(BLM) protests.

Americawashurtingandprotestshadbrokenout incitiesacrosthecountry,sowiththeonlycamera hehad,whichhappentobeanoldphonewitha brokenscren,Devonheadedoutintothestrets photographingtheprotestsinaction. Ontheground,inthemidstoftheupheaval,he interviewedprotesters,capturingthetruefeeling ofthepeople;thedeepseededhurtofsomany suppresedvoices,inwhatwouldbecomehis firsttasteofmixingpoliticalreportingandsocial activism.

Folowinghisnew found pasion for politicalreporting,Devon continued documenting major events,covering boththeNovemberpresidentialelection inDCandthesubsequentinauguration ofPresidentJoeBidenandVPKamala Haris;thefirstfemaleVicePresident andwomenofcolorintheWhiteHouse.

Inspiredbyeventsunfoldingaroundhim andonamisiontofurtherhiscarerin ‘on-the-ground’reporting,Devoncreated adocumentaryfilmteamtohelpfacilitate continuedcoverageofmajorpoliticaland socialisues. Hence,theGroundsDocTeamwasborn. Tohelpsubstitutehisstudiesandfilm makingprojects,Devonalsoworksatthe TrioCAPprogram inChicago,creating PublicServiceAnnouncementvideosfor theprogram.

Lockdownofhumansbroughtmorethanjust freedomtowildlife,italowedtheplanetarare momentintime,freeofhumanabuse,just enoughtimetotakeabreathoffreshair.It showeduswhatisposible,whatwearecapable ofifweputourmindstoit,aswelasgivingus astarklookathowdestructiveweareandwhat ourworldcouldlooklikeifwechangedour ways. Throughoureƅorts,wehopetoinspirepeople aroundtheworldtotakeresponsibilityforthe worldaroundus,astogetherwestrivefora moreenvironmentalysustainablefuture.

IntheageoftheInternetandcorporatenewsmedia, thegroundruleshavechangeddramaticaly.Ournews feeds(forthemostpart)comewithanagendaand don’tnecesarilyreflectthevoiceofthepeopleinthe mistofthesituationortheonesmostaƅectedbythe eventsbeingreportedon.Asperspectivescansoeasily bedistortedintranslation,thereismuchtobesaid byletingthosevoicesbeheardwithoutthefilterof majornewsoutletsandindividualopinions,however reputablethesource. InspiredbyhisexperiencecoveringtheBLMprotests aswelastheUS2020electionsinWashingtonDC, Devonandtwoofhisfelowstudentsandaspiringfilm makers,combinedforcestoform theGroundsDoc Team,witheachmemberspecializinginadiƅerent aspect.Summerlee Schmit has a background in television and news production,while Zack KeltnerisaphotojournalistbackedbytheNational Pres PhotographyAsociation,andDevonisthe ‘on-the-ground’reporter. Withavisiontocreatedocumentariesshowingthe worldasis,theysetoutonamisiontoprovidea first-handperspectiveandin-depthlookatmajor eventsastheyunfold.Notasnewsmedia‘perse’but ratheras‘on-the-ground’reporters,listeningtothe voiceofthepeopleintheirpurestandunfilteredform.

Propeled bytheegregiouspoliticaldivideand misinformationcampaignresultingfrom the2020 elections,aswelasthesubsequentatackonthe Capitolbuilding,theTeamfocusedtheircoverageon theaftermathandfaloutofthoseevents,folowing thestorywhereverittookthem. 2020wasabusyyearfortheGroundsDocTeam. Theycoverednumerousprotestsinterviewingboth ‘stopthestealprotesters’aswelasthe‘anti-trump protesters along the way.They also covered thePresidentialinaugurationinDC aswelas investigatingastoryofalocalcommunitygroupand theirongoingbatlewithcoruptionamongstlocal communityleadersandpoliticians.Continuingwith theirdocumentaryaspirations,theTeam planon filmingaborderpatroldocumentaryinJuneof2021. Through theirunique style ofreporting,the GroundsDocTeam arecommitedtobringing enlighteningand in-depth contentdirectlyto thepublic,seen through theeyesofpeople. Theirmisionistokeepviewerswelinformed ofthe world around uswhileleaving them withatruesenseofwhatitisrealyliketobe ‘boots-on-the-ground’.
